Hi, I’m Kyle Burch, general manager of Abernathy Roofing and Construction. Today I’m going over a system roof and why it is so important.
Components of a Roof
First, let me tell you about the components of a roof. Many of you have done a new roof, maybe one or two times maximum in your life. So, start with you have shingles, which will be the roof’s main area. Underneath the shingles, you have your decking. Under the decking is the felt, and in your valleys, you should have an ice and water shield that’s going to be like a three-foot-wide membrane that’s waterproof. That’s not going to let any water. If water gets under the shingles, it will not get into your home because the valleys are your most high-traffic areas. The ridge gap will be at the peak of your roof, and then the starter will go around the entire perimeter and not let the wind lift those shingles whenever we get high winds.
Importance of a System Roof
Not many people have ever heard the term because there are not many companies doing this. We use all Owens Corning products, and that’s important because if you were to have a warranty claim or an issue down the road, you want to make sure there’s one manufacturer that’s going to replace that entire roof and not just certain pieces. A lot of companies do this to save money if they’re going to use, say, Owens Corning shingles. They will use a different manufacturer for felt, a different manufacturer for starter, and a different manufacturer for ice and water. That helps their bottom line and saves money, but it doesn’t help protect you, the homeowner. We want to ensure you’re 100% protected and have the best roof possible and the best warranties, and they all stay intact for you.
